I realized that handling the day-to-day rigors of my own business and interacting with customers gave me great joy and played to my strengths; so after the partnership ended, I knew that I would start another coffee shop. That is the reason I now have Backatown Coffee Parlour which has been open for three months, with my business partner and wife, Jessica Knox. It offers coffee, loose leaf teas, espresso based drinks, and light fare like sandwiches and salads.”

Walk into Backatown Coffee Parlour and one of the first things one notices -- besides the scent of brewing coffee -- are the high ceilings, natural light and colorful murals. The coffee shop on Basin Street was opened in November by Alonzo and Jessica Knox. The building sits on property where the former Iberville public housing complex once stood. It is just down the block from St. Louis Cemetery, Canal Street, and the French Quarter.

Backatown serves up beans from one of the country's only black-owned coffee roaster, Bean Fruit in Pearl Mississippi, and has opened up in the city's colorful and historic former Storyville. It's near St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 on the grounds of what used to be the Iberville housing complex. The Treme/Basin St. area is ready for a renaissance, and Backatown wants to be part of it. Enjoy espresso coffee drinks as well as soup, paninis, and house-made sweet potato pie (a family recipe of the owner).
